“So You Say You Play Jazz?” José Carr’s True Story
On May 9th, BellisarioSonic Arts will release a feature length documentary on Ensley native and Alabama Jazz Hall of Famer, Daniel ‘José’ Carr. Over a year and half in the making, the 75-minute feature film will be the first of its kind to be released in Birmingham, Alabama.
Director Matthew J. Bellisario says, “While Jazz may be holding its own in larger cities like New York, it is dying in most other places across America, including Birmingham. This film aims to rekindle an interest in jazz music for those who may not be very familiar with this great American art form.”
In addition, Birmingham’s own author and radio personality Burgin Mathews says, “While jazz has a rich and unique history in Birmingham, it is relatively unsung around the jazz world”.
‘So You Say You Play Jazz? José Carr’s True Story’ will offer a unique experience of Jazz music through the life of Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame trumpet player José Carr and the musicians who accompany him on his live jam sessions. The film highlights Carr’s passion for preserving the experience of live Jazz music, teaching future generations, and educating the public about the history of Jazz in Birmingham.
The film’s central figure, José Carr, says, “Musicians have died for the music, many were poor for the music. A miracle has to happen if we are to keep this tradition alive! I’m doing my part.”
The entire film was produced and filmed in Birmingham, Alabama by a small local volunteer team with experience in television broadcast production, including producers Greg Hendrick and John McCarthy.
The premiere screening of the documentary will be held on May 9th at 7PM at True Story Brewing Company, 5510 Crestwood Blvd, Birmingham, AL 35212. The event will be free of charge and include a live jazz performance by José Carr. You can learn more at http://www.josecarrtruestory.com
